Cantaloupe Island

Herbie Hancock recorded Cantaloupe Island in 1964 with Freddie Hubbard (tpt), Ron Carter (bs), and Tony Williams (Drs). This is a simple tune with just three chord changes and a funky ostinato.

Here are charts for trumpet, bass, and piano. A Backing Track is at the bottom of the page.

Backing Track

Here is study guide for the chords in Cantaloupe Island. The stemless half-notes are chord notes, the stemless quarter-notes complete the scale. Also practice connecting the chord notes with a chromatic scale (see below).

Practice Ideas: Learn to connect chord tones with a chromatic scale. Remember: all the notes are good, chord tones, scale tones, and chromatic scales. Chord tones are “anchor points” that you can approach many ways.
