Flute

Because the flute is considered a Double, there isn’t a consistent flute part in the standard Jazz Ensemble. In 1957, a jazzy flute tune called Swinging’ Shepard Blues by Moe Koffman, hit America’s Billboard chart and gave hope to student flutists.

Rahsaan Roland Kirk - American Woodwind player of many instruments, created a new vocabulary of jazz flute sounds, including multi phonics, percussive pad playing, growling.

Herbie Mann - American flautist with good visibility in pop music Because of his jazz hit, Memphis Underground. I posted the original recording here, but there is an full concert found elsewhere on YouTube.


Hubert Laws - An important leader of the smooth jazz style in the early 1970s. Hurbert Laws was trained as a classical flutist at Jilliuard and was a member of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and also played with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. He is best know for his jazz versions of classical hits. This is his version of Fire and Rain.


Bobbi Humphrey - American jazz flautist helped set the tone for Smooth Jazz with her recordings in the early 1970s. I’m sorry that I do not have live footage.
